A near-antique desk lamp or table lamp of mushroom-like form, with a steel base and shade and a turned wooden stem, with a black lacquer that fades to a graduated old gold effect on the stem. The lamp was made in France in the 1930s, possibly the early 1940s.

The lamp largely relies on reflected light from the off-white interior of the shade, with the bulb mostly concealed within a metal cone, meaning it casts a warm, indirect and glare-free light from most angles.

The lamp has been sympathetically restored – unfortunately, we found it rusted and buried under many coats of later paint. Taking clues from surviving scraps of paint, the lacquerwork has been professionally restored.

The lamp has been rewired and brought up to modern safety standards with a new British-made solid brass earth bulb-holder, and a generous length of premium Italian 3-core cable with a period style mottled grey woven cotton sheath.
