A very scarce pair of mid-century 'Chelsea' wall sconces designed in 1958 by Peter Rodd & Richard Stevens for Atlas Lighting (later Thorn Lighting), with thick mouth-blown controlled bubble conical glass shades in a vibrant Cased Ruby colourway by Whitefriars Glass, England.
‘Chelsea’ wall lamps are very uncommon, and when found at all, are usually with the later chromed or polished aluminium metal fittings. These black-lacquered steel versions were early in the production run.
The bulbs are concealed deep within the metal tubes, illuminating the glass shades indirectly, which makes them glow gently and highlights the controlled bubble pattern from below, as well as giving a soft, glare-free uplight.
One lamp retains its original, early Atlas label.
Both lamps have been rewired with premium quality 3-core double-insulated cable, and are ready to install.
