A vintage mouthblown glass shade of ribbed/angular form with a hand-painted grid decoration in a muted striated beige with textured squares between. It is topped off with a dark brown hardwood cap. It is probably French in origin, and likely dates to the late 1950s or early 1960s.
The surface decoration is unusual – it uses a technique called ‘Matthey Crinkles’, pioneered in the late 1930s, which gives a textured finish to the glass using fired-on glass enamel powders. This provides the sugar-like texture to the transparent squares. Before firing, the glass has then been painted over on a turntable, providing the basket-like grid pattern. We’ve not been able to find anything very similar.
The lamp has been cleaned and rewired. It accepts a single B22 bayonet cap bulb, and comes supplied with a generous length of premium Italian double insulated 3-core cable with a vintage style mottled grey linen braid.
